In 2013, The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) launched the Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) initiative in partnership with the Colombia Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism (MinCIT) with the funding of the US Department of State, and the support of the Higher Education for Development (HED) agency under the Pathway of Prosperity Initiative.

The goal of the initiative was to transfer, adapt and implement the SBDC Model in Colombia with the goal of creating and expanding the growth of small businesses. The “Centers for Enterprise Development” support new and existing small businesses, to start, grow and become more competitive.

Thanks to this initiative, 9 centers for enterprise development are currently operating under MinCIT, in various regions across Colombia. To view the 9 MinCIT centers please click here.

In 2015, SENA Colombia (The Colombian National Service for Learning) signed an agreement with UTSA Institute for Economic Development and SBDCGlobal with the goal of creating a national network of SBDCs in Colombia. SENA, the largest workforce training and small business assistance network in Colombia, has 117 locations located throughout Colombia, which serve more than 9 million people annually.

Through 2016 and 2017, UTSA provided the necessary consulting, training and guidance for the creation of a national SBDC network in SENA 117 Units for Entrepreneurship. The “SENA SBDC Centers for Enterprise Development” assist entrepreneurs and business owners in establishing and growing their businesses through a free and confidential suite of advising services. Services include, but are not limited to, feasibility studies, business strategies, financial planning, marketing, sales and professional networking all geared to the creation and capture of economic impact.

On December 14, 2017, the SENA-SBDC Network comprised of 117 centers located in the 32 Departments of Colombia was officially launched.
